Modernist on music : Tymoteusz Karpowicz’s "Stone music" and Ezra Pound's "The pisan cantos"

This is a comparative interpretation of selected poems by Tymoteusz Karpowicz and Ezra Pound. It presents a reading of 20th century Polish poetry in the context of Anglo-American modernism. Tree Rings, the last volume of Tymoteusz Karpowicz, one of the leaders of the postwar Polish avant-garde, are set against some of The Pisan Cantos, a landmark of American modernism. What links Karpowicz’s poems (Stone music, From Behind the Glasses, High Biting) and Pound’s Canto LXXV, parts of Canto LXXIX, Canto LXXXI and Canto LXXXII is their evocation of music. Both poets explore the connection between the art of sound creation with the art of poetry; they also use various strategies of making references to the history of music. Both are convinced that there is an inextricable connection between music and poetry. The article looks also at the epistemological and autothematic implications of Karpowicz’s and Pound’s use of music in their poetry
